Food, Inc. provides viewers with an inside look behind the veil hiding the mechanisms behind the Unites States’ food industry. Filmmaker Robert Kenner exposes the handful of corporations that control the industry and, who more often than not, place a premium on profit at the expense of consumer health with the consent of the USDA and FDA.

“We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, insecticide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli – the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.”

The film features interviews with experts such as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto) as well as with progressive social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield’s Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms’ Joel Salatin, who all help Food, Inc. reveal surprising and disturbing truths about what we eat and how it is produced.

Damn, this trailer made me contemplate the Popeyes’ chicken I had for dinner – the shit was delicious. The film is in theaters now.

pacquiao-vs-cotto

While some paper champions name Floyd Mayweather Jr. wait for opportune times to fight the best boxers in the sport, two of the sport’s tougher champs are already picking a day to fight each other.

Those two would the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 knockouts), and welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs). This is an intriguing matchup pitting Cotto, who just narrowly beat Joshua Clottey at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, the bigger puncher against the smaller but faster Pacquiao.

Promoter Bob Arum, who promotes both boxers, has tentatively scheduled the fight for Nov. 14 in Las Vegas. One thing is for certain, styles make fights, and these tenacious boxers should be up to give fans a night to remember.

Haven’t we seen this image time in and time out? White police officer, black man, the excess use of force and a general lack of common sense.

In this case Oklahoma State Trooper Daniel Martin got physical with paramedic Maurice White Jr. who was transporting a patient to an emergency room. Martin was upset that the ambulance driver did not yield to him as he sped to provide backup on a call and was further angered when he thought the driver flipped him an obscenity.

As the ambulance pulls over to the side of the road the trooper begins hollering at the driver of the ambulance he’s giving him a ticket for failing to yield encapsulating his anger by stating “I ain’t going to be putting up with that shit! You understand me?” to which White Jr. replies, “And I won’t put up with you talking to my driver like that.”

The situation escalates wherein troopers choke White Jr. in the ensuing scuffle. State trooper Martin has since been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

This time around the lame is Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for high-jacking Iran’s election this past week. With 80 percent of the populace coming out to vote the audacious Ahmadinejad claimed victory with 63 percent of the vote which many political experts internally and externally find extremely doubtful.

The results have led to rioting by supporters of presidential challenger and runner-up Mir Hossein Mousavi who has demanded for a recount and has called upon the free world for support. Protesters have been beaten up and locked up by the Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and cell phone as well as Internet services have been disrupted by the state as they try to quell the outrage.

The United Nation’s Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has since asked the country’s leadership to respect the will of the people and investigation the allegation of fraud. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who initially gave the election his blessing – ultimately making the results final – has also called for an investigation, although I’m sure it’ll be much to do about nothing.

It’s plausible that if the election’s results stay as they are and Ahmadinejad’s nuclear ambitions stronger than ever, that an inevitable military conflict with Israel and/or the United States is upon us. What a mess!

Here’s a look at what’s happening in Iran:

Holocaust Muesum Shooting

By Javi

A crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. was the site of a shooting today when an elderly gunman entered the museum with a rifle and opened fire wounding a security guard before being shot.

Authorities said that the elderly man began discharging round immediately upon entering the museum. The shoot, who is in critical condition, has not been identified but authorities believe he is a white supremacist.

The museum draws over a million and a half visitors annually and has a heavy security presence at all times both inside and outside the building. According to the AP, law enforcement officials are investigating whether James Von Brunn, a repuited white supremacist, was involved somehow in the incident.
