The Department of Energy (DOE) has its own “Cash for Clunkers” program coming this Fall as part of the economic stimulus plan that will help out appliance manufactures. Unlike the automobile program though, consumers do not have to exchange their old home appliances to receive rebates on newer ones.
Under their “Dollars for Dishwashers” program, which officials hope provide a lift to an industry that has been down 25 percent in the past 3 years, the DOE is looking at 10 categories of Energy Star-qualified 10 appliances.
The state-run initiative may have the luxury of picking models, setting rebate amounts and may also include energy efficient light bulbs.
Some of the major appliance makers have expressed concern that though the program is a good idea, conflicting regulations and rebates from state to state may be a headache for potential customers, thus hindering sales. Some believe that in order for the program to attain its fullest potential it would make sense for the appliance program to share the same guidelines nationwide.
Personally, as fan of energy efficient products, I think the program will work – let’s see if it pans out. Now if they could maybe unravel the deficit, fix the New York City’s MTA and come up with a worthwhile healthcare package we could have some faith in big government again.
Hundreds of fans and supporters came out to pay rap’s most influential group, Run-DMC, homage yesterday in Hollis, Queens by renaming the intersection at Hollis Avenue and 205th Street to Run-DMC JMJ Way.
The celebration was a heartfelt tribute for the trio’s fallen DJ, Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, who was murdered inside his Queens’ studio in 2002. Comprised of Jam Master Jay, Joseph “DJ Run” Simmons and Darryl “D.M.C. McDaniels, Run-DMC introduced hip hop into the mainstream during the 80s, early 90s with commercial hits such as “Walk This Way” featuring Aerosmith and “Down with the King.”
Run-DMC has accomplished many firsts for hip hop, including being the first rap artists to have gold and platinum certified albums and to be nominated for a Grammy Award. The group was also induced into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, becoming only the second hip hop group to receive the honor.
Now they are the only hip hop group to ever have a city street renamed after them.

A planet that is about 325 light-years away from planet Earth is on a collision course with its star within the constellation Phoenix. The planet, named WASP-18b, has 1 million years to live according to the planet’s discoverer Coel Hellier, a professor of astrophysics at Keele University in England.
Identified as a suicidal planet by astronomers, WASP-18b is a fiery planet so close to its star that it is triggering tremendous “plasma tides” on the star which in turn will be engulfed by the star, WASP-18.
The planet orbits its star in less that a day, and is 10 times as big as the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter.
Sony announced a new online website, WordsMoveMe.com, for literature lovers to share their favorite passages with other bookworms, while simultaneously unveiling the electronic company’s new e-book reader, the Sony Reader Daily Edition.
While the 7-inch touch screen e-book unit provides users with access to Sony’s bookstore, the website works much like Twitter, wherein users type and post excerpts up to 255 characters long. Users can also include tags as well as a book’s title and author.
According to TechCrunch.com, “the problem is that right now it is a self-contained site. Facebook and Twitter integration are coming ‘in phase 2’.”
The Reader Daily will debut in December at a cost of $399, so don’t discard your library card just yet.
At the annual Chelsea Flower Show, entrepreneur and inventor James Dyson stole the show with his awe-inspiring Wrong Garden fountain display, captivating competitor and attendee alike.
Inspired to create the illusion of water running uphill, a set of four glass ramps are positioned in a square with water appearing to travel up each of them before it pours off of top, continuously restarting at the bottom of the ramp. As compressed air is pumped in where the water enters, bubbles travel up the ramp, assisting in the illusion of upward mobility.
Mr. Dyson, famously known for his bagless vacuum cleaners, “wanted to create a series of cascades that are all on the same level – an everlasting waterfall.” His MC Escher influenced project is part of the Daily Telegraph’s Silver Gilt award-winning garden.
