iraq-bombing

Iraq has seen a spike in violence since Friday when a series of attacks commenced, the worst being an attack early Monday morning in Baghdad where 47 people were killed in a succession of bombings.

One of the attacks subsequently destroyed a village just north of Mosul. The recent killings have been the worst outburst in violence since Iraqis officially took command of national security on June 30. American troops have been largely confined to their bases.

Mosul is perhaps the most violent place in Iraq. The ruthless homegrown insurgent group Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia is known to make their home in the city. Members of Saddam Hussein’s former Baath Party also call Mosul home.

A power struggle between Sunni Arabs and Kurds that doesn’t appear to have a end in sight have further complicated security in the country.
