Congrats to the Alabama Crimson Tide! The Tide washed up the Texas Longhorns in college football’s national championship last night by a score of 37-21.
Texas put a scare into the Tide early in the fourth quarter but it was far from enough as Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram and Alabama’s staunch defense drove a stake through the heart of the Longhorns with two touchdowns down the stretch.
The fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is dead in the water for now after two days of mediation proved futile. The fighters have been in a bitter dispute over blood testing.
Mayweather’s camp has been pushing for Olympic-style blood testing, under the guise that they believe Pacman uses performance enhancement drugs, wherein both fighters would be subjected to random tests. Pacquiao, who initially refused to take blood tests, finally agreed to them before the fight’s media conference as well as immediately after the fight. However, has not agreed to have blood drawn within 30 days of the bout.
Blood testing is not a requisite under the Nevada Athletic Commission which governs boxing matches in the state. The fight was supposed to take place on March 13 in Las Vegas.
From what ESPN is reporting it the sounds like Mayweather isn’t entirely interested in stepping into the ring with boxing’s pound-for-pound champ.
Loleini Tonga, the fiancé of former Cincinnati Bengals Chris Henry who passed away after jumping off the back of a pickup truck she was driving last month spoke with ESPN reporter John Barr for the first time about the tragic incident.
Tonga told Barr that her husband-to-be did not intentionally jump to his death as has been reported. “As far as [Chris] wanting to end his life, no, he had too much going for him,” she said.
Here’s a snippet of the interview. The entire interview profiling Henry’s life and death, including the full interview, will be aired on ESPN’s Outside the Lines this Sunday at 9 a.m. EST.
Sex beats death according to Yahoo’s CEO Carol Bartz who told financial forecaster earlier in the week that Tiger Woods’ sexapade story is “better than Michael Jackson dying” because it has helped the online search engine generate money ad sales.
“It’s kind of hard to put an ad up next to a funeral,” said Bartz, who is known for her shady and tasteless commentary. She even said Tiger’s story will “absolutely” help Yahoo reach its projected numbers this quarter, although the company now says the comment was meant to be a joke.
Yahoo is not the only search engine benefiting from Tiger’s “transgression.” Google has also seen a significant spike in traffic from individuals searching for information on the golf superstar and his alleged extramarital affairs.
It’s good to know Tiger’s slight downfall is improving other folk’s bottom line.
Twenty-five years ago Michael Jordan laced up his first pair of Nike Air Jordans. Now, a quarter century later, His Royal Airness is releasing his 25th anniversary sneaker nationwide on February 13.
The most notable aesthetic on the 25th anniversary edition is a unique transparent thermoplastic urethane window, shaped as a basketball, providing extra flexibility and subconsciously representing MJ’s competitive psyche.
The sneaker is also designed with a hinged light-weight toe layer which adds strength to the sneaker without losing flexibility. These latest Air Jordans will come in the Chicago Bulls colorways.
Miami Heat guard Dwayne Wade will be the first to debut the 25th anniversary edition at NBA All-Star Weekend in Dallas this February. Flash is Brand Jordan’s newest member, inking the guard to an endorsement deal after his departure from Converse.
”The celebration of the Air Jordan 2010 and our 25th anniversary are the pinnacle of a year full of milestones for me,” said Jordan in a statement.
Check out what Hatfield and Mark Smith, creative director for the Jordan Brand, had to say about the design and significance of the 25th anniversary Air Jordan.
A subliminal marketing scheme by spice rum maker Captain Morgan’s was killed by the NFL this week. The league learned that Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek’s touchdown celebration against the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday where he struck the brand’s trademark pose was part of an advertising campaign designed by the rum makers, and has since the “Captain Morgan.”
Celek stuck the pose during the third quarter when he scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Donovan McNabb. He then sought out the cameras’ attention before placing his left-hand on his hip and raised his right leg, impersonating the Captain Morgan pirate.
As far as anyone knows, it’s the first time we’ve seen that type of guerilla-style advertising campaign in an NFL end zone. And if the league has its way, it will be the last, too. The “Captain Morgan” was effectively banned this week after the league learned of a wider campaign meant to get players to repeatedly strike the pose during NFL games.
“A company can’t pay a player to somehow promote it’s product on the field,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told Yahoo Sports. “Every league has the same rule. … It’s come up before, companies trying to use our games and then players for ambush marketing purposes.”
