Hundreds of fans and supporters came out to pay rap’s most influential group, Run-DMC, homage yesterday in Hollis, Queens by renaming the intersection at Hollis Avenue and 205th Street to Run-DMC JMJ Way.

The celebration was a heartfelt tribute for the trio’s fallen DJ, Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, who was murdered inside his Queens’ studio in 2002. Comprised of Jam Master Jay, Joseph “DJ Run” Simmons and Darryl “D.M.C. McDaniels, Run-DMC introduced hip hop into the mainstream during the 80s, early 90s with commercial hits such as “Walk This Way” featuring Aerosmith and “Down with the King.”

Run-DMC has accomplished many firsts for hip hop, including being the first rap artists to have gold and platinum certified albums and to be nominated for a Grammy Award. The group was also induced into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, becoming only the second hip hop group to receive the honor.

Now they are the only hip hop group to ever have a city street renamed after them.
