Growing up blocks away from the Brooklyn complex Lemon Andersen hyperbolically compares to Fort Knox in his one-man play, County of Kings, this play became quite intimate and personal to me because I know exactly where “Margarita’s bodega” and Ortiz Funeral parlor are located.
Lemon’s autobiographical portrayal of his rough and tumble upbringing in Brooklyn’s working class neighborhood of Park Slope is dynamic. Mixed in with slang and Spanglish – Spanish with broken English – the half Puerto Rican, half Norwegian poet’s detailed descriptions of everything from Coney Island’s famous Polar Express Himalaya to crack homes in Columbus, Ohio give the play its authenticity.
What do you get when Mike Jordan and Spike Lee come together to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Lee’s urban classic “Do the Right Thing”? Well sneaker-heads get the Do the Right Thing Pack that consists of two retro high-top Air Jordan 1s.
These kicks come in two metallic color patterns on the Nike Swoosh: red and green. The white high-top is accompanied by laces the same color as the metallic accents. Millennium Shoes and Osneakerare both taking pre-orders now.
So the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Denver Nuggets last night 105-103 at the Staples Center in what was a very exciting game. Aside from the game though, I couldn’t help notice how New York Knicks basketball fan Spike Lee, sitting courtside, was grabbing at and riding Kobe Bryant so hard his breathe probably smelled like the guard’s jockstrap after the game.
Now you may ask yourself, who cares? Well diehard sports’ fans, especially Knick fans who have suffered through a decade of horrendous basketball at the Garden, care. True Knick fans, like the ones Spike contends to represent, all remember how his silly ass antics during the 90s, when the Knicks were perennial contenders, would rile up opponent’s best players. It wasn’t until Indiana Pacers’ guard Reggie Miller embarrassed us; emphatically letting the filmmaker know our team choked that he chilled out. We weren’t too crazy about him then and we are definitely not crazy about him now.
